The Training Place was created in 1985 as The Aberdeen Area Career Planning Center to serve northeastern South Dakota in the areas of adult education learning, GED preparation and testing, career counseling and skills training. In 1989, it was incorporated as a 501(c)(3). In 2009, Aberdeen Area Career Planning Center became NewTec, Inc. (North Eastern Work and Technical Education Center) and a new organizational focus on work and technical skills training was adopted. In April 2014, the organization changed their name from NewTec, Inc. (North Eastern Work and Technical Education Center) to The Training Place and expanded their scope of work to include corporate solutions.
The Training Place works in collaboration with strategic partners and is recognized as the area’s leader in matching training programs with instructors and curriculum to meet the needs of employers and individuals. In addition to monthly core classes, The Training Place provides customized training solutions and specialty training offerings year-round. They play an important role in the community and area workforce development.
